This Salisbury steak recipe is the ultimate comfort food that can be made in less than 30 minutes.
What exactly is salisbury steak? You may be surprised it isn’t actually a cut of steak, it is more of a cross between a meatball and a burger patty. This comfort meal is best served with mashed potatoes to really take advantage of the mushroom and onion gravy.
Salisbury Steak Ingredients
While there are plenty of shortcut ingredients out there that can be swapped in, the flavor profile with this homemade mushroom and onion gravy is better than any I have ever tried.
Salisbury Steak Ingredients
- Ground Beef – the base of our delicious steak starts here
- Bread Crumbs – adds texture to the patty
- Worcestershire Sauce – everything is better with the sauce that no one can pronounce.
- Egg – this helps to bind all the ingredients together
- Seasonings – garlic powder, onion powder, salt
Gravy Ingredients
- Butter – used to help saute onions and mushrooms
- Onion – thinly sliced for the mushroom and onion gravy
- Mushrooms – use your favorite mushrooms here
- Beef Broth – used for the base of the gravy
- Worcestershire – again for flavor
- Cornstarch – used to thicken our sauce
How to Make Salisbury Steak?
- Add all patty ingredients to a large bowl. Use clean hands to combine. Divide the mixture into six balls and flatten into patties.
- Cook patties in a large skillet until beef is no longer pink. Remove patties from the skillet and set aside. Adjust temperature to medium heat.
- Add butter, onions, and mushrooms to the skillet and cook until onions and mushrooms are softened.
- Combine water and cornstarch in a small bowl.
- Add Worcestershire sauce and beef broth to the pan. Then pour in cornstarch mixture. Simmer over medium heat until sauce has thickened. If the sauce is not thickening the way you want. Add more cornstarch to water and add to sauce.
- Add patties back into the pan and cover with gravy. Simmer over medium heat for 5 minutes to warm patties back up.
- Serve with mashed potatoes to really take advantage of the delicious gravy.
