Honey whole wheat bread is a delicious way to incorporate whole wheat bread into your life!

Easy Whole Wheat Sandwich Bread Recipe

Did you know that making homemade sandwich bread is actually super simple to do? This honey whole wheat bread tastes so much better than store bought bread that has been sitting on the shelf for weeks. With a few simple ingredients you can have homemade bread in a snap!

What’s in Sandwich Bread?

  • Flour – I used a stone ground whole wheat flour for this recipe.
  • Yeast – I like to use Dry Active Yeast
  • Milk – This is the KEY to a nice fluffy loaf. I see lots of recipes use water for the main liquid, but the milk really makes this loaf stand out. I use regular whole milk, but you can swap for a dairy alternative or water as well.
  • Butter – Adds buttery flavor to the dough. If you need a dairy free option I have swapped the butter for avocado oil.
  • Honey – this is used to help activate the yeast and add in a little sweetness. You can also swap for regular sugar if you are baking this for your kids under 1.

How to make fluffy sandwich bread

  • Combine 1/2 cup warmed water with yeast and honey. Set aside until foamy.
  • In a large bowl combine remaining ingredients, except milk.
  • Add in yeast mixture and 1/2 cups milk. Mix together, adding in remaining milk a tablespoon at a time as needed. You want the the mixture to just pull away from the bowl.
  • Cover the dough and let sit for 10 minutes. This helps give the whole wheat time to absorb all the liquid.
  • Knead mixture for 7-10 minutes. Shape into a ball, place back into bowl, and let rise for an hour, until doubled.
  • Place dough onto counter and flatten into a rectangular shape and roll into a log. Place into a loaf pan and let rise another hour.
  • Bake at 350 for 35-40 minutes. Top with a little more butter if desired.

Your website recipe doesn’t include butter. I just happened to scroll all the way down to see that your IG post recipe included butter but this wasn’t until after I had made my dough. I’m kind of annoyed by this, especially since the dough without butter was so dense that it stalled my kitchenaid motor.

Oh no! I’m so sorry for that mistake! Fixing that now. If it is any If your dough is super dense you may also need to add in some additional liquid.

Does this bread turn out dense and dry? I make a bread that follows a recipe very much like this one; and, it’s always dry and dense, except for when it first comes out of the oven.

Density typically comes from improper proofing. Make sure that you are allowing your bread enough time to double in size.

Comment GRILL for both the recipes!

Grill girl summer is officially underway 🔥☀️

Turns out grilling is a whole lot less intimidating when you realize it’s basically just an outdoor oven with better flavor. Thanks @traegergrills.

Tri-tip for dinner, mixed berry cobbler for dessert, and not heating up the kitchen in the process? That feels like a win to me.

Also, respectfully, we are no longer leaving the grilling to the boys this summer.

This one is for those who don’t really like cake.

Homemade fresh mint chip ice cream, a fudgy cookie layer, and cookies & cream ice cream all stacked into one very perfect ice cream cake.

One of my favorite things about making desserts from scratch is getting to create flavor combinations you can’t always find at the store.

And honestly, that’s the fun of homemade, making exactly what you wish existed.

One of my favorite things about making things homemade is getting to create something you wish existed in the world.

I wanted the nostalgic crunch of those strawberry cheesecake ice cream bars… but with raspberry and an actual cheesecake twist. So naturally I had to make it happen.

And honestly? This might be one of those recipes that makes you stop after the first bite and think, where has this been my whole life?

Sweet, creamy, crunchy, raspberry perfection.

Would you try raspberry over strawberry? 👇
