This savory breakfast monkey bread is the perfect hearty breakfast that kids and husbands alike will love.

savory ham and cheese monkey bread in bundt pan

I know I have seen the sweet cinnamon sugar monkey bread recipe floating around the internet, but I don’t know about you I don’t always love to hype my children up on sugar first thing in the morning. It is usually a recipe for a disaster around here. So, I decided to take the same concept, but make it savory. Adding in hearty breakfast meats, yummy eggs, and baking up in the cute little bundt pan!

I chose to make mine with ham, but it would be so yummy with breakfast sausage or bacon as well! There is so much room for making this your own. I also decided to just use plain cheddar cheese, but on my list is to make this as a bacon gouda version. OMG! I’m drooling just thinking about it!

Enough with what I wish I would have put into the savory monkey bread. Let me show you what I actually added.

savory ham and cheese monkey bread ingredients
  • 1 package of canned biscuits. You could make your own as well!
  • 1 lb ham steak, diced
  • 6 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 4 tbsp butter, melted
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded

That’s it! I love a super simple breakfast and this definitely fit that! It took me about 15 minutes to put together (since the ham steak is precooked) and then I let it back while myself and the kids got ready. As a warning, I didn’t quite grease my bundt pan enough, so it did stick a little bit when I tried to turn it out, but it was still super delicious!

Let me know in the comments what flavor combinations you think would be good with this savory monkey bread! I’m excited to experiment.

These Homemade French Onion English Muffins are soft, savory, and packed with caramelized onions and Gruyère cheese.

INGREDIENTS
ENGLISH MUFFINS
3 cups all purpose flour
1 1/4 cups water warm
2 1/4 tsp yeast
1 tsp salt
2 tbsp sugar
1 cup gruyere cheese shredded
cornmeal
CARAMELIZED ONIONS
2 onions
2 tbsp butter
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1/2 tsp thyme
2 cloves garlic minced
1 tbsp worschetire sauce
1 tbsp balsamic vinegar

INSTRUCTIONS
CARAMELIZED ONIONS
Add butter to a skillet. Once hot and melted, add the onions, salt and pepper, and allow them to cook down and deeply caramelize for about 20 to 25 minutes, stirring frequently, until the onions become very dark, soft and jammy.

Add in the garlic, Worcestershire, and balsamic vinegar, and allow it to bubble up and reduce for about 30 seconds. Allow mixture to simmer until reduced.

Place aside to cool.

ENGLISH MUFFINS
In a bowl combine warm water, yeast and sugar. Mix and allow to sit for about 5 minutes. The mixture should start to become foamy. This is how you know your yeast is activated!

Add in flour, salt, shredded cheese, and caramelized onions. Mix until combined adding in an additional flour as needed if the dough is not coming together. Cover and let rise for an hour or until mixture has doubled in size.

Pour some cornmeal onto a baking sheet. Set aside.

Once dough has risen pour onto a floured surface. They dough will be sticky. Gently press into a circle and divide into 8-12 segments.

Gently form each of the segments into a ball and place onto the prepared baking sheet (This helps prevent them from sticking). Repeat with each segment. Cover balls and allow to rise for an additional 25-30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350.

Heat a skillet(or large griddle) to medium heat. Place balls into the skillet and cook for about 5 minutes per side, then place onto a clean baking sheet. Repeat with remaining balls.

Bake in oven for 10-15 minutes and enjoy!
