Family pictures can be a stressful time, use these simple tips to make them be a little easier and get photos that you love.
Family pictures are one of those items I truly covet. Having photos to look back on, see the kids grow and having someone capture your children’s personalities is so special to have. I especially love taking those photos in places that are meaningful to us. So, I wanted to share our recent family photos with you all and some tips I have learned to help those photos be something you love.
First, find a photographer you love and makes you feel comfortable. Our photographer has been photographing our family for years, but there are so many great photographers our there! Do your research, find one who’s style is meshes with you. Also, think of family pictures as the investment they are. Don’t just go with the cheapest option.
When choosing family outfits I always start with what I’m going to wear. While the rest of the family gets a small say in what they will be wearing, I want to make sure that I like what I’m wearing. If I don’t, I know that in the end I will not love the photos as much as I could. Many photographers offer a client closet that you can choose from or I love places like Baltic Born, Amazon, or Ivy City. Look for subtle prints or solids.
Once I have chosen what I want to wear I start adding in the rest of the family. If you are wearing a print, pull colors from your outfit for the family to wear. If you are wearing solid, choose colors that flow with yours. Please just don’t do all matching outfits, try to find something for your family pictures that feel like your family.
When it comes to children don’t stress if they aren’t cooperating. I’m not above bribing my 4 year old to cooperate, but in the end let their personalities come out. Remember, that they don’t love to stand still and smile on que so give them grace. This is another reason why I love more lifestyle typed portraits vs posed portraits. Just have fun and let the kids be kids!
