Rustic roasted tomato sauce made with fresh whole tomatoes, onions, and garlic. Chunky, flavorful, and perfect for pasta, pizza, or freezing.

Homemade Rustic Tomato Sauce

If you’re looking for the richest, most flavorful tomato sauce, roasting your tomatoes, onions, and garlic is the way to go. This rustic roasted tomato sauce captures all the natural sweetness of ripe whole tomatoes, caramelized onions, and golden garlic, then blends them into a hearty sauce perfect for pasta, pizza, or dipping.

Why You’ll Love This Rustic Roasted Tomato Sauce

  • Deeper flavor: Roasting intensifies sweetness and adds a hint of smokiness.
  • Rustic or smooth: Blend just enough to keep texture, or strain for a silky sauce.
  • Simple ingredients: Just tomatoes, onion, garlic, herbs, and olive oil.
  • Freezer-friendly: Make extra now and enjoy summer flavor all year long.

Ingredients for Roasted Tomato Sauce

  • Fresh Whole Tomatoes: Roma or plum tomatoes work best, but any ripe tomatoes will do.
  • Onion: Roasting brings out a mild, caramelized sweetness.
  • Garlic: Roasted garlic becomes soft and nutty.
  • Olive Oil : Helps caramelize and adds richness.
  • Fresh Basil: Adds freshness right at the end.
  • Dried Oregano: For that classic Italian depth.
  • Salt & Pepper: Season to taste.
  • Red Pepper Flakes (optional): For a little heat.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Roast the Vegetables

Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Arrange whole tomatoes (halved if large), onion quarters, and garlic cloves (still in skins) on a baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil, season with salt and pepper, and roast for 30–40 minutes, until tomatoes are blistered and onions are caramelized.

2. Blend the Sauce

Squeeze roasted garlic cloves out of their skins and transfer all roasted vegetables to a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth or slightly chunky, depending on your preference. For an ultra-smooth sauce, push mixture through a fine mesh strainer.

3. Simmer & Season

Pour blended sauce into a pot. Stir in oregano and red pepper flakes, then simmer for 10–15 minutes on low to let the flavors meld. Taste and adjust seasoning with more salt and pepper.

4. Finish with Fresh Basil

Stir in chopped basil just before serving for a bright, fresh flavor.

Serving Ideas

This roasted tomato sauce is perfect for:

  • Tossing with spaghetti or penne
  • Spreading on homemade pizza
  • Serving with grilled chicken or meatballs
  • Dipping crusty bread

Tips for the Best Fresh Tomato Sauce

  • Use ripe tomatoes. The riper, the sweeter and more flavorful your sauce will be.
  • Simmer low and slow. This develops depth and prevents burning.
  • Make ahead. Sauce tastes even better the next day as the flavors meld.
  • Freeze for later. Let sauce cool, then portion into jars or bags and freeze up to 3 months.

Final Thoughts

This rustic tomato sauce made from fresh whole tomatoes is the definition of comfort food. It’s wholesome, hearty, and so much more flavorful than anything from a jar. Whether you serve it over pasta, layered in lasagna, or frozen for later, it’s a recipe that brings the taste of summer to your table any time of year.

Girls day, but make it a little messy, a little creative, and a lot delicious.

I hosted the sweetest paint + pot afternoon with my friends. Just us, some blank pots, and zero pressure to be “good” at anything except having fun.

We painted, we laughed, we caught up on life… and of course, we ate really well:
🍋 Lemon blueberry cake
🍯 Garlic honey chicken with fresh peach salsa
🥙 Greek salad hummus bites

It’s wild how something this simple can fill your cup so much. No big production, just intentional time together, and honestly, we need more of that.

10/10 recommend hosting your girls, even if it’s not perfect. Especially if it’s not perfect 🤍

Who’s coming next time? 🫶

Buttery croissants, juicy beef, melty cheese, and caramelized onions, this Croissant Burger is your sign to upgrade burger night.

Crispy on the outside, soft and flaky on the inside, and loaded with flavor in every bite. Once you try burgers on croissants, there’s no going back.

Made this on the @blackstoneproducts and it turned out so good for an easy weeknight dinner.

Save this for your next cookout and let me know if you’re team croissant bun 👇

Episode 6 of building my dream garden 🌱

This week felt like a big one… we filled the beds (finally 🙌), built a trellis for the tomatoes, and got so much in the ground. Carrots, radishes, potatoes, and onions are officially planted, and I tucked strawberries into my @greenstalkgarden vertical planter which I’m way too excited about 🍓

The best part? Seeing what’s already thriving! Raspberries, peas, chives, and garlic are doing their thing and reminding me why I started all of this in the first place.

Slowly but surely, it’s all coming together 🤍

This is your sign that dinner doesn’t have to be complicated!

Garlic butter parmesan chicken + crispy smashed potatoes = chef’s kiss every single time.

Simple, cozy, and SO good. Keep this one in your weekly rotation.

And keep an eye out next time you’re at Walmart, the new Blackstone seasonings are hitting shelves near you.
