Down on the Farm First Birthday Party

I can’t believe it has taken me so long to sit down and write about Brody’s first birthday party. This past year has just flown by, so instead of reminiscing about his first year here, I will save that for another blog post.

The party turned out great, despite it completely down pouring the day of the party. I am so glad that we thought ahead and considered what that it most likely would rain. So we had it in our hay shed and set up a couple propane heaters to keep everyone nice and warm. They only thing I wish I would have done differently was to buy another helium tank, because we didn’t get to blow up all of the balloons that I got.

I knew that we were going to want to do a John Deere themed party, but I did not want it to be an in your face tractor party. So I did more of a farm theme, with John Deere accents. Since his party was going to be the first weekend of April, in Idaho, we knew we needed a place to escape from the weather if needed, so we decided to set everything up in our hay shed. It worked out perfectly, because it was nearly empty from feeding cows all winter and I was able to use a couple extra big square bales for the food table.

As far as decorations went, I tried to keep it pretty minimal. I purchased a big roll of burlap fabric and cut it to length for table cloths, I then found these super cute grass table runners to put on the long tables. For the round tables I planted some spring wheat into little buckets, it took about 10 days for them to grow to the height in the pictures, and added some miniature straw bales. The banner and balloons were nice for added space filling.

Food I kept pretty minimal as well. The weekend before I made some sugar cookies (cows and combines) and no bake cookies (cow patties), my mom made cupcakes, I made Brody’s smash cake, and I just bought donuts (tractor tires), and rice krispie treats (hay bales). We had a veggie tray, meat tray, rolls, nachos, taco meat, and pasta salad. The party wasn’t until 2 pm, so we decided to do snacks.

Get everything here: Grass Table Runner, Tractor Plates, Burlap Tablecloths, John Deere Sit&Scoot, Cookie Cutters, Cow Balloons, Tractor Table Tents, Tractor Balloon Bundle, Tractor Banner

Comment HERBS for all the planter.

My @greenstalkgarden herb garden might be my favorite thing in the garden right now.

There’s something so special about stepping outside and grabbing fresh herbs for dinner. Basil, dill, rosemary, mint, all the herbs my heart desires.

Comment GRILL for both the recipes!

Grill girl summer is officially underway 🔥☀️

Turns out grilling is a whole lot less intimidating when you realize it’s basically just an outdoor oven with better flavor. Thanks @traegergrills.

Tri-tip for dinner, mixed berry cobbler for dessert, and not heating up the kitchen in the process? That feels like a win to me.

Also, respectfully, we are no longer leaving the grilling to the boys this summer.

Comment CAKE for all the recipe details.

This one is for those who don’t really like cake.

Homemade fresh mint chip ice cream, a fudgy cookie layer, and cookies & cream ice cream all stacked into one very perfect ice cream cake.

One of my favorite things about making desserts from scratch is getting to create flavor combinations you can’t always find at the store.

And honestly, that’s the fun of homemade, making exactly what you wish existed.
